Wind and Water Erosion in Semi-arid Ecosystems

چکیده
Soil erosion is an important process in dryland ecosystems, yet measurements and comparisons of wind and water erosion within and among such ecosystems are lacking. Here we compare wind erosion and transport field measurements with water erosion and transport from rainfall-simulation for three different semi-arid ecosystems: a shrubland near Carlsbad, New Mexico; a grassland near Denver, Colorado; and a forest near Los Alamos, New Mexico. In addition to comparing erosion loss from an area, we propose a framework for comparing horizontal mass transport of windand water-driven materials as a metric for local soil redistribution. Median erosion rates from wind for vertical mass flux measurements (g m d) were 1·5 × 10 for the shrubland, 8·3 × 10 for the grassland, and 9·1 × 10 for the forest. Wind-driven transport from horizontal mass flux measurements was greatest in the shrubland (15·0 g m d) followed by the grassland (1·5 g m d) and the forest sites (0·17 g m d). Annual projections accounting for longer-term site meteorology suggest that wind erosion exceeds water erosion at the shrubland by c. 33 times and by c. five times at the forest, but not the grassland site, where the high clay content of the soils contributed to greater amounts of water erosion: water erosion exceeded wind erosion by about three times. Horizontal transport by wind was greater than that by water for all three systems, overwhelmingly so in the shrubland (factor of c. 2200). Our results, which include some of the only wind erosion measurements to date for semi-arid grasslands and forests, provide a basis for hypothesizing trends in wind and water erosion among ecosystems, highlight the importance of wind erosion and transport in semi-arid ecosystems, and have implications for land surface geomorphology, contaminant transport, and ecosystem biogeochemistry. Wind Erosion Induced Soil Degradation in Northern China: Status, Measures and Perspective
Soil degradation is one of the most serious ecological problems in the world. In arid and semi-arid northern China, soil degradation predominantly arises from wind erosion. Trends in soil degradation caused by wind erosion in northern China frequently change with human activities and climatic change. To decrease soil loss by wind erosion and enhance local ecosystems, the Chinese government has ...
متن کاملMulti-scale controls on and consequences of aeolian processes in landscape change in arid and semi-arid environments
Aeolian processes are tightly linked to soil and vegetation change in arid and semi-arid systems at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Wind influences patterns of vegetation and soil within the landscape, and these patterns control wind erosion at patch to landscape scales. Aggregated at larger scales, patterns in soil and vegetation distributions influence global distributions of dust and i...

Aims & Backgrounds: Considering the fact that a large part of our country is in arid and semi-arid regions and every year wind erosion and dust storms cause significant damages to the country's bio-economic resources, it is necessary to study this phenomenon. This study investigated the erosion rate of geomorphological facies of Gonabad city in relation to wind erosion. Methodology: The wind er...

Introduction: More than 168 countries face the phenomenon of land degradation and desertification. Land use changing and more exploitation of nature's potential in arid and semiarid ecosystems over the past three decades have increased the trend of desertification phenomena in these ecosystems. Deserts are dynamic ecosystems that are constantly evolving. Deserts are dynamic ecosystems that are ...
متن کاملParametrization of the increase of the aeolian erosion threshold wind friction velocity due to soil moisture for arid and semi-arid areas
Large-scale simulation of the soil-derived dust emission in semi-arid regions needs to account for the in ̄uence of the soil moisture on the wind erosion threshold. Soil water retention consists of molecular adsorption on the soil grain surface and capillary forces between the grain. Interparticle capillary forces (characterized by the moisture tension) are the main factor responsible for the in...
